| The Unbeliever LP is a monumentally heavy 12
tracker by Cardiff's 'Shaped By Fate'.
Clocking in at an impressive 50+minutes, the length
of the tracks suggest that one would either be greeted by frantic
twisting and turning songs (in the vein of Forever Is Forgotten)
or will be bored to death by constant and generic pummelling.
Luckily the former is true and Shaped By Fate prove to be fully
adept at writing tracks that constantly shift. Tempo changes are
used masterfully, constantly providing an injection of energy
whilst simultaneously conveying a feeling of freshness and untred
territory.
The
Unbeliever kicks off with the appropriately titled, "launch
the immortal fleet", a short cinematic track combining elements
of subtle post-rock which grows into a substantial Isis-esque
fusion of emotional guitar melodies, crunching guitars and stomping
double pedalling. From then on, its full speed ahead. Straight-edged
HxC, rasping throatwork, grinding powerchords and death metal
guitar melodies are brought into the fray in a highly energetic
and brutal package. Shaped By Fate prove they are not a one trick
horse with the well executed track "my sun sets to rise again".
Similar in vein to the opener, this is a foray into classy brooding
melodic guitar work (similar to Esmerine or Sickoakes) with an
underlying and highly threatening intensity which takes charge
but never moves away from the melodic intent.
Within
this album, the crunching guitars and changes in tempo provide
ample head-nodding and moshpit battling energy (as exemplified
by track 5 "deeper the knife slides"). In addition,
the constant changing of style and technical proficiency make
The Unbeliever a brutal metalcore album which, whilst restricted
by its genre, never succumbs to the frighteningly popular school
of generic metalcore. This is UK metal that can stand proud amongst
the best that America can offer. (KS)
