Fast forming a devote following and described
as the most exciting live band in London right now, Mama Shamone
are proving to be hot property in the indie-scene, gaining plaudits
from Radio 1 DJ’s, winning ‘Road to V’ and supporting
the likes of Bloc Party and The Rakes. Comprising of Mama (lead
vocals), Flip X (guitars/synths), Ru Man Chu (bass/vocals) and
Killer Jules (drums), their proprietary brand of dirty electro-rock
is delivered in a fast and furious style that will leave you floored.
Mama Shamone appeal to a broad cross section of the cooler-than-thou
indie scene thanks to their embrace of rock, punk, electro and
hip-hop, entities which are fused into ridiculously catchy tunes
and pulled off with a self-assured swagger.
Seemingly designed to get the most out of a live
audience, the 3 tracks making up ‘Over’ sees the band
inject an accomplished playing ability to songs which utilise
clever arrangements. With a sound that’s somewhere between
Peaches and Primal Scream, the four-piece whip listeners into
a frenzy with their chomping groove, electroid-flair and high-octane
choruses. Lead vocalist Mama proves to be every inch a sassy,
funked up rock’n’roll diva, delivering her vocals
with unbounded energy and a girlish veneer. The choppy and pounding
‘Do You Believe’ writhes like a steamy rollercoaster
with Mama’s pre-rehab diva vocals snaking across the vocal-range.
Closing track ‘Feel’ is possibly the strongest cut
on the EP, gyrating on a skilled arranged cascade of bouncy riffs
and electro squelch that transcends into dirgey, stomp-inducing
rock territory.
With this release, Mama Shamone certainly live
up to the hype and over the course of the next few months, a busy
touring schedule will mean you’ll be hearing (and hopefully
seeing) a lot more of them. (RM)
