Senking aka Jens Massel has already proved to be one of the masters of the micro-glitch and dub-tech arena, and this has been portrayed through seminal releases such as 1999’s ‘20” to 2000’ EP, 2000’s deep reverberating ‘Silencer’ LP and 2003’s ‘Tap’ LP. ‘List’ is Senking’s 11th release since he started way back in 1998 and it proves to be, not only his darkest offering, but a slight departure from his trademark sound.

‘List’, on Raster-Noton, is a 40 minute, 9 tracker mastered by Bo Kondren. It is a surprisingly claustrophobic affair with deep dark oozing’s of molten bass underpinning skittering micro-claps, spliced snares and well carved, twitching industrial sounds. Snares often form military-esque patterns creating a self-perpetuating energy whilst driving semi-industrial bass motiff’s echo those of dubstep luminaries such as Kode9 and Loefah, and there is a definite nod towards the deep driving industrial bass exercises of Amon Tobin.

Minimalist horror film melodies drift and glide through the deep bass and micro-beat sandwich, creating a very dense affair which brings up memories of Murcof at his darkest or Lutz Glandien at his most minimal.

This release comes highly recommended. Winter evenings will never be the same. (AM)

For fans of: Alva Noto, Amon Tobin, Geoff White, Veer, Murcof
